Questions Parents Ask

What are the Stepping Stones?

The Bunny Hopkins Stepping Stones are handcrafted wooden balance discs designed to encourage active, open-ended movement. Children can arrange them in endless configurations to create balance paths, obstacle courses, or imaginative play setups.

How many stones are included?

Each set includes 6 handcrafted stepping stones (balance discs).

What age are they best for?

Recommended for children 18 months and up. Stepping Stones support early balance development and continue to challenge coordination, agility, and spatial awareness as children grow.

What developmental benefits do they support?

Stepping Stones build balance, coordination, core strength, and body confidence. Rearranging the discs encourages creativity, planning, and problem-solving—key foundations of open-ended play.

How much weight can they hold?

Crafted from durable maple hardwood, each stone is designed for active play and long-term use. They are sturdy enough for children and built to withstand years of movement and exploration.

Are they safe for toddlers?

Yes. Each Stepping Stone is handcrafted in our Georgia workshop using non-toxic, water-based finishes and is third-party tested to meet or exceed CPSIA, CPSC, and ASTM safety standards.

For best stability, use on a rug, carpet, or play mat and maintain a clear play area. Adult supervision is recommended during active play.

Do they include non-slip grips?

Yes. Each set includes furniture-grade, self-adhesive grippers that parents may apply to the bottom for additional friction and floor protection.

Please note: once grippers are applied to one side, that surface becomes non-playable. Some families prefer to leave both sides usable to maximize open-ended play flexibility. The choice depends on your space and comfort level.

Can they be used indoors? Will they damage floors?

They are designed for indoor play. For added slip resistance and floor protection, use on a rug or play mat. Optional grippers can provide additional traction.

Do they stack for storage?

Yes. The stones are designed to stack neatly when not in use, making storage simple and space-efficient.

What’s the difference between Raw Timber and finished options like Maple Magic?

Raw Timber is unfinished wood—straight from our Georgia workshop with no protective sealant. It’s ideal for families who want to stain or finish the stones themselves.

Finished options, including Maple Magic and our color finishes, are sealed with a durable, non-toxic, water-based finish that enhances the natural grain while protecting the wood for long-term use.

Why does each stone look slightly different?

Because they are made from real wood. Natural grain patterns, knots, and tonal variations are part of what make each piece unique—no two stones are exactly alike.

How do I clean and care for them?

Wipe clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners, excess moisture, and prolonged outdoor exposure.

Are they a good gift?

Yes. Stepping Stones are a thoughtful, heirloom-quality gift for birthdays and holidays—especially popular with grandparents—because they promote screen-free, active play in a beautifully simple format.
