Why Back-to-School Shouldn’t Mean the End of Play
Shamik DasguptaShare
As a parent and the founder of Bunny Hopkins, this time of year always stirs something in me. Back-to-school season is full of momentum—early mornings, routines, to-do lists, and a general push to get everything “back on track.”
But there’s something I’ve come to realize, both through my own parenting journey and through the stories we hear from families every day: structure doesn’t meet every need.. Especially not for our kids.
After a full day of sitting still, following directions, and focusing hard, what our children need most isn’t more structure.
They need play.
The kind of play that isn’t scheduled or structured or supervised.
The kind that’s self-led, imaginative, and a little wild around the edges.
At Bunny Hopkins, every wobble board, every triangle, every ramp we build is rooted in that belief. We don’t make toys to fill time—we create tools that invite movement, creativity, and self-regulation.
I’ve seen it firsthand in our home. When my child has had a tough day at school, it’s not a screen or a structured activity that helps. It’s the ability to move, to climb, to pretend, to reset.
That reset matters.
Because play is not a distraction from learning - it is learning.
It builds resilience. It builds confidence.
And it gives kids the space to process everything that comes with being in school, growing up, and finding their place in the world.
So if you’re reading this, maybe in between lunchbox prep and sorting through school emails, I want to gently encourage you:
Make room for play.
Not after the homework is done. Not as a reward.
As a need.
Give your child time to wobble.
To build a fort out of a triangle.
To invent a world that only makes sense to them.
You’ll be surprised what it unlocks.
Wishing you and your family a season full of learning, laughter, and play.
With warmth,
